Weekend of May 24-26, 2019

I picked up the kids on Friday at 1pm at the Walmart parking lot where Tiffany works. I was planning on taking them swimming but earlier in the week my pool key stopped working so I wasn't sure we would be able to. Tiffany told me she got them all new swimsuits. I wasn't surprised by that. She also told me that they wanted new swim goggles and Lily wanted hers to be a snorkel type that covers the nose. Lily later told me she wanted it to also have a snorkel. Tiffany expected me to get all the kids out right then and go buy these things. While that sounds fun I don't have that kind of money. I got into the van and the kids started to demand the same things as well as asking to go to Chic-fil-A. I told them that I didn't even know if the pool key worked and that we should check that out first before spending any money. We went home, got the mail, the pool key and tested it out. It worked!

When we got home we started the list of what we wanted and needed to do this weekend. I wasn't sure I wanted to go to the pool yet but the kids asked to go play outside and I liked that idea. They pretty quickly came back in asking to get in their swim clothes because the neighbor, Coy, had water balloons and they wanted to play. I worked on the lawn while they played. That only lasted so long so since they were mostly ready we went to the pool next. We walked to the pool and got there around 3 and I planned on only staying an hour but they begged to stay longer. I decided we could stay if they took a 10 minute break like the public pools always made us do as kids. They all had fun and got some sun especially where I missed around their noses. The only eventful thing that happened was after the break at the splash pad, Matthew jumped back into the pool without his floaty on. He went past the third step where he can reach and started to panic and doggy paddle in a panicky way because he couldn't manage to come up for air. I got him out after a second hoping that the gravity of the situation would sink in in his mind. I don't know that it was long enough for it to sink in but I wasn't going to wait any longer. I did a short swimming lesson with Nate and did the 'waterski on my knees' with each of them; Matthew doesn't like that much.

We walked home for dinner where we had green beans, chicken rotini soup, and pink lemonade mixed with vitamins. I told the kids, after they begged to sleep downstairs, that they could only sleep downstairs one night this weekend. They wanted to sleep downstairs on Friday night but when choosing between watching a movie and making cookies, Lily and Matthew wanted to make cookies and Nate wanted to watch a movie. I told them it was best to watch a movie on the same night as sleeping downstairs so I had them decide on sleeping downstairs and watching a movie or sleeping on their beds and making cookies. They all chose sleeping downstairs. After Nathan finished his chapter of scriptures, we watched G-force on Netflix. They wanted to watch movies they have already seen, which I'm not a fan of, but when I narrowed it down to ones they hadn't seen they agreed to try it out. Nate wasn't impressed with the movie and Lily wanted to watch something else when there was less than 30 minutes left, so I told her no and they went to sleep when the movie ended. After what felt like a long night with Matthew squirming all over the place, I decided to go to bed upstairs. When I got there I found out it wasn't even midnight yet. I woke up at 5 and studied scriptures and made it back to the couch before anyone woke up.

On Saturday, the kids had granola and Raisin Bran for breakfast. After that we all put up the hide-a-bed together. Then the kids all made sock puppets. After that we put in a load of laundry into the washing machine and then we had a lesson about money. I taught the first principle which is God gives up everything. I'm going to change it to God owns everything but that was the point. I taught them principles of ownership where God owns everything and He gives us what we have as well as how there is always more because God is the creator and can make more of anything. I taught principles to prevent an entitlement attitude such as God doesn't owe us anything that He hasn't told us that we would get and even then it is on His timing. This lead to the concept that no one owes us anything that isn't agreed on. I also used 10 quarters to teach the commandment of tithing. I then went on to the second principle which is work is rewarding. I talked about how there are different types of work, how work is from God, and how money symbolizes work.

After that lesson was over, we walked to the pool. Matthew started off in the park. We stayed there for about an hour until 11 then walked home. For lunch Nate and I had grilled cheese sandwiches, Lily had a quesadilla, and Matthew had cheese rolled up in a tortilla. After lunch was cleaned up the kids did a puppet show for me. Then we sat down and started planning the restaurant event. After that we started cleaning for it. We cleaned the kitchen table and halfway through the dining room table. Then I taught them how to make an origami dog and turtle using YouTube. Then we had pasta with white sauce for dinner. Nate wrote me a compliment on the menu I created for dinner, "Graet Shef!"

After dinner we walked to the pool again and stayed there for about an hour. We came home and made chocolate chip cookies together. We all helped add ingredients, stir, and form the cookies. It took more than double the expected cook time but while they were cooking and cooling Nate decided to read for story time. He chose five story books: Puppy in the Garden, Green Eggs and Ham, So Big, Spot's Fun Year - which includes Spot Goes to School and Spot Goes to the Beach, and The Very Best Mama. While Nate read stories, I helped Lily learn some letters. The cookies still were not done so I read them Amber on the Mountain. By then the cookies were done so I gave two to Nathan and two to Lily. Matthew fell asleep on me while I was reading but when I picked him up to take him to bed he woke up, so he got cookies too.

In the morning, everyone had granola for breakfast and before I got down stairs Nate had already made powdered milk by repeating what he saw me do the day before; although I suspect it was watered down, they didn't complain. Then we had scripture story time and got ready for church. For lunch we had peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and Nate helped prepare them. At church I taught Matthew's class. We discussed Jesus entering Jerusalem, cleansing the temple, and Zacchaeus the publican. During singing time Nate was asked to lead a singing exercise in front of the whole primary but he declined. That surprised me. Lily wanted to, which also surprised me, but she wasn't selected.

We went home for about an hour before heading to Ginette's house. While there Nate read three baby books - Quantum Physics, Nuclear Physics, and Rocket Science. We ate shell pasta for dinner and Nate refused the red sauce so he had it with butter, salt, and pepper. Lily helped with Atala's bath and Curtis made some simple origami 'finger monsters.' On the way home everyone fell asleep. When we got home everyone woke up, which is unusual. Nate went straight to bed but Lily and Matthew wanted stories so I started the 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins. Part way through they were starting to fall back to sleep so I sent them to bed.

We had a repeat of Sunday's breakfast and took Nate over to Daniel's house around 9 and picked him up around 2. In between, I took Matthew and Lily to the pool. We were out of swim diapers but Matthew didn't want to swim. He decided he wanted to play at the park and not swim. I told him if he didn't get into his swim clothes he couldn't change his mind and he was ok with that. We walked over barefoot and pretty quickly Matthew was done with the park and wanted to swim. I told him he couldn't change his mind but I rolled up his pants and let him put his feet in. He played on the top step and got his hair wet too. We went home around 11 and we made tortilla pizzas. They both helped get the tortillas, choose and spread the sauce, and grate and spread the cheese. I even let Lily put hers into the toaster oven and watch the cheese melt.

After picking up Nate we headed over to Old Settler's Park to meet up with Ginette and Curtis. We all had fun either swinging or using the zip line-like portion of the playground. I did the zip line with Lily a few times and she did it on her own once. They let us use a swim diaper for Matthew and we all headed to the pool. Atala's is five months, almost six, and the water was too cold for her. She had a stinky diaper and chugged some formula before they left. I had them take a break to the splash pad while I made them dinner - Peanut Butter and Jelly. We stayed at the pool for another hour or so and headed home. Nate finished first Nephi. Then when it was close to time to go they all got hungry again so we had leftover pasta. I brought them out to Lago Vista because Tiffany was working. On the way, I had Matthew and Lily do the first four articles of faith then we had a discussion about the Plan of Salvation.
